The State of Washington's New Online U.

Washington state has created its own virtual university. WGU Washington, a non-profit online school, is subsidiary of Western Governors U. The new university offers more than 50 bachelor’s and master’s degrees in business, teacher education, information technology and health professions, including nursing.

“WGU Washington offers our residents another option for finishing a bachelor’s or master’s degree,” said Washington Governor Chris Gegoire. “This new university, with its flexible, innovative learning model gives those with work and family obligations the opportunity to get the education they need.”

The competency-based program allows students to advance at their own pace, take advantage of prior experience, write papers, pass exams when they are ready. Each student creates an individualized learning path and is guided by one-on-one faculty/mentor support. The program is expected to be self-supporting, without state funds. The new virtual university will start operation July 1. Students will enter on the first day of each month. Tuition of $2,890 covers a six month term.
