New portal launched on distance learning in Europe

The European Union announced today that it has funded a new portal that will be available September 27 to provide information on the “the quickly growing study options” available throughout Europe. The Distance Learning portal will be launched at the European Association of Distance Teaching Universities annual conference in Cyprus.

According to Piet Henderikx, Secretary General of the EADTU, as distance learning makes higher education more accessible and affordable, it "has become an important answer to the current educational challenges and will significantly impact our educational landscape."

The new portal has been developed by Studyportals and EADTU for “learners worldwide to study abroad from home,” the release announcement said. It noted that 180 institutes are part of this European initiative including 88 in the United Kingdom with three in Ireland ranging from Open University to the London School of Economics. The programs include more than 1,200 Bachelors, Masters, PhDs and short courses.

Officials stated that the availability and popularity of online education in Europe is increasing with about 500 European institutes providing short courses and entire degree programs at a distance. Last year, student enrollment increased 15-20 percent.
