Haitian U.’s to Receive New Distance Education Support

The Agence Universitaire de la Francophonie and the U. of Quisqueya in Haiti are exploring ways to reconstruct the universities in Haiti with the use of distance education, according to an article yesterday in University World News, a new electronic publication based in London.

The publication said the AUF plans to establish distance education programs focused on “essential courses” with the support of French higher education institutions. The details of the plan will follow a conference at the U. of Montreal May 18.

The AUF is an international organization representing higher education in French-speaking universities and has worked with eight Haitian universities in the past. It is currently involved in a Haitian teacher-training system in partnership with the Organisation Internationale de la Francophonie, the University World News said. Also, on February 16, the AUF sponsored a videoconference for Haitian science students at the Quisqueya U. in Haiti. A seismologist at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris discussed tectonic plates and earthquakes.
