U.S. Soldiers Deployed Overseas Complete Degrees in Pennsylvania

Pennlive.com, an online edition of The Patriot News, reported Sunday that despite the lack of access to the Internet and numerous other logistical problems, more American soldiers are completing their degrees through distance learning programs. And schools in Pennsylvania are now joining those in other states in offering programs tailored for the military overseas. These include Central Penn C., Harrisburg Area Community C. and Penn State’s World Campus, which has 398 active soldiers enrolled with 35 deployed abroad.

Barmak Nassirian, associate executive director, the American Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers, said that many colleges and universities are seeing an increase in active soldier enrollment. The Post-9/11 GI Bill added benefits to the military and their families. And about 385,000 soldiers and veterans have applied for the benefits to date, with 185,000 enrolled in an institute of higher education.
